Letters to Jean in Jail

Please write your letter to Jean in the form on this page, and we will get the letters to Jean as soon as is possible

On June 30th, a group of seniors and water protectors, including Jean Swanson, blocked Kinder Morgan's gate to stop the building of the Trans Mountain pipeline. They took a stand to protect the future of this planet.

The court interpreted this action as criminal activity and sentenced them to seven days in jail. Jean and seven others started their sentence on August 15th. Read Jean's statement to the court here.

We are all heartbroken to think of Jean in jail and outraged by the decision of the court. We also know that civil disobedience can help stop the pipeline. As Jean said in her statement to the court:

“Why are the crown and the courts so scared of us ‘sinister seniors’ that they have to throw us in jail? Because they know that if we take a stand against injustice, we can win.”

Join us in sending Jean notes of love and solidarity for when she returns. We will get all the letters to Jean as soon as is possible.

    Hi Jean,

Thanks so much for doing this for all of us. Nonetheless it is unjust, not just because you’re a good person who seeks to help not hinder, but because you’re right. The law is wrong.

Please take care. It is hard to think of you, being shackled, taken to a cell. I’m hoping you get out early and maybe can take a few days just for yourself.

    Solidarity and peace,

    Patrick

Thanks Jean! Although I don’t believe Trudeau will give up as he has too many debts to the oil companies, I want to thank you for your service to the peoples of the west coast and the globe. I voted for you last time and I’ll vote for you again this time. Please take some comfort in the fact that many people admire your principals and your actions even though we do not take the same steps along the way. Your a very good person. Take care. We appreciate you.

Hi Jean. It’s Roger here. You said at the courthouse you came dresssed for shackles. Bitter humour but it says a bunch about how strong you are. I know you don’t like being the focus of attention but at least there is more attention given to indigenous land claims now. It really is a time to show what side we take. I’m so happy to share the same side as you and the rest of the sinister seniors ( and Adrian too). See you soon. And in case you haven’t heard:

Seven days in jail followed by four years in city hall!.

Jean, you are a mother, you will remain a grandma to most of us, your lagacy will live on, they made you look a criminal in front of many of us who were at the court with you.

You are not a criminal, you are the voice, for the voiceless, the protector of injustices, including our Mother Earth.

We shall still go to jail, coz of what we believe in, you are not a lone, you are just stepping in feet of Nelson Mandela, who lived his entire youthful life in jail from 1962, serving 27 years split between Robben Island, Pollsmoor and Verster prisons.

He became the president of South Africa, Jean you know what awaits you at the City Council, you are going in with more fight to make Vancouver a better place to live, leaving no one out.

7 days to them, means heavens, 7 days to you, will be contemplating what is right to the Pple of Vancouver, Rent Freeze, ending the prejudice against addicts, who among the low income Pple, can pay rent in Vancouver at more than $2,000 per month, that is your concern.

Now the law that needs to protect the seniors is the same law that is putting the senior in jail, when the seniors stand to protect their children’s and the generation to come. Jean you are not alone in this, we are with you, praying for you, and you are coming out shining more.

If you believe in a cause go for it, don’t be ashamed of going jail, be proud of what you believe in. Wonderful

To those other beautiful ladies who were jailed together with you, ladies/seniors stand tall coz you have tested the system, they are scared of the warriors

    Hi Jean

Solidarity from here, my friend. 7 days is nothing compared to the danger we face. My time didn’t come this morning (something told me clearly not to go to Camp Cloud last night) but it will come soon. And no doubt: if enough of us say no, this pipeline will not happen.

Day 1 of you waking up in jail. I hope your cell wasn’t too cold last night, and they’ve let you keep your big socks on. The court yesterday sucked but you were defiant as always. They took you away right in front of a hundred or so pairs of eyes who see you as the hero that you are and proved themselves the villains. It stung and I’m sad. But please be well.

    Love, Sara
